Flat Earth Pottery is handcrafted which insures that each pot is unique.  The pottery is handmade on a potter's wheel or pressed from a slab of clay.  The "green" pottery is first bisque fired then individually decorated and glazed by hand.  The glaze firing takes eight to ten hours and is fired to approximately 2400 degrees.

Mike and Joyce incorporated their business, Flat Earth Clay Works, in 1976.  They first manufactured pottery in the garage of a rental house; Flat Earth now occupies a 10,000 sq. ft. building.  The Schlyer's have raised five children, all of whom have grown up working in the pottery.

Michael has a master's degree (plus many hours) in ceramics and sculpture, taught ceramics and sculpture for ten years and has been "artist in residence" for the Wichita Public Schools. He has been exhibiting his ceramic pieces in one-man shows, galleries and festivals for over 35 years.  He has a number of pieces in permanent collections across the United States and exhibits in invitational art shows.

We are the creators of the work presented for display and have developed a compatible working environment over the past 35 years.  Our stoneware, high-fire clay body is a formula made from five clays from across the United States.  The clay pieces are formed on a potter's wheel or from clay slabs.  Often ribbon tools are used to carve the surfaces.

The pieces are then bisque fired to approximately 1800 degrees Fahrenheit.  These bisque pieces are painted with glazes, reloaded into large gas kilns and re-fired to 2400 degrees.

The subject matter has evolved over the years to present and replicate an updated primitive appearance. Please feel free to ask questions about our pottery or forming processes.
